Over-the-top, sensational rhetoric is really not our style. We like to keep things firmly grounded in reality. We avoid making problems seem worse than they are just to drum up support. The sky is not falling. If we had to, we could suffer through whatever the legacy system has in store for us in the coming years. If it really is inevitable, unavoidable, and unfixable, then that’s just life. Suck it up!

But there’s an important question here that must be asked: is that really true? That there is no escape, and this is just the way things are? Or are we being, essentially, gaslighted into thinking those things, as many victims of other kinds of abuse are.

How can you tell if you are genuinely living in a system of abuse?

Systems of abuse have well-established characteristics, regardless of the context in which the abuse is taking place. We can use those to test the hypothesis.

Hypothesis: “We are living in a system of abuse.”

Reference class: We are looking at social systems where one individual/group/institution has durable power over another, and the weaker party is trained to accept that arrangement as normal, deserved, inevitable, or their own fault.

Key traits:

1. Power asymmetry
   One side makes binding decisions—the other side mostly reacts.

2. Blocked or costly exit
   You can technically leave, abstain, disengage, or “vote them out,” but the real cost of meaningful escape is high.

3. Intermittent reward
   The system occasionally responds just enough to preserve hope: one good ruling, one inspiring candidate, one reform, one “historic” election.

4. Blame reversal
   The harmed party is blamed for the dysfunction: “voters are ignorant,” “people are too polarized,” “citizens don’t participate enough.” The system creates structural powerlessness, then calls the resulting disengagement “rational ignorance—” and then uses that ignorance as proof voters cannot handle power.

5. Gaslighting / reality management
   The system says: “This is democracy!” “This is rule by the people!” even when voters experience government as something alien and beyond their control.

6. Learned helplessness
   People stop trying to change things because they have ‘learned’ that effort does not connect to outcome.

7. Isolation and atomization
   Each person is made to feel alone, numerically tiny, and ineffective.

8. Moral injury
   The person must participate in a rigged arrangement while pretending it is legitimate.

9. Naturalization
   The final defense is: “This is just human nature. This is the best we can do.”

Each of these traits of the legacy system is evidence for abuse. One or two traits might be ordinary institutional friction. But when many appear together, confidence in the “system of abuse” hypothesis rises sharply.

For the legacy system, the strongest evidence is not merely that outcomes are bad. It is that the system repeatedly produces powerlessness, then uses the predictable effects of powerlessness as evidence that people should remain powerless. That is the abusive loop.

The question is not even whether a system is good or bad at achieving certain outcomes. The question is, is it a system that maintains power by normalizing powerlessness.
